Backlash Against The Love Guru Backlash

File under: The Siddhi of PR

A Hindu reform group in the U.S. has come out against the recent fundamentalist Hindu clamor about The Love Guru:
Navya Shastra, the organisation based in Troy, Michigan, which earlier spoke out against astrology, female foeticide and Dalit discrimination, has argued that hyper-sensitivity over inaccurate or distorted religious depictions in mass media erodes the tradition of tolerance of criticism in the Hindu faith.

"Hindus have a remarkable history of freedom of thought and expression. Unfortunately, this is being eroded these days by hypersensitive and misguided chauvinistic pressure groups, perhaps taking their cue from more chauvinistic traditions..."
Can you say "Hinduvta?"

We applaud the Navya Shastra for keeping it real among the histrionic defenders of a blinkered version of their own faith. The Love Guru promises to accomplish what we shoot for each time we post here, which is to inject a bit of fun in the overly serious business of being a guru or guru's devotee.

Navya Shastra is a great group. They also oppose homophobia in India.

Perhaps Navya Shastra would speak up against exploitive godman gurus who turn followers into unthinking obedient slave sevaks making millions for the aggrandizement and/or the extravagant life-style of their gurus.

Gurus are like kings and emperors of ancient times. Disciples are their subjects. Like an emperor, a guru is to be obey w/o questioning. True disciples are to give all and expect no reward for their services.

All this selfless obedient slavery is supposed to help the disciples get rid of the egos (for their own good!). For a lucky few, the guru may someday be please enough with them to bestow them with enlightenment after many years of devoted slavery - if their guru is indeed capable of such ultimate blessing.

Do I really need to be an obedient devoted slave to some exploitive godman to attain enlightenment??? I hope not.

Toedancing, not all Gurus are as you described. There remain some true Gurus.
