Joy To The World, Maharishi-Style

File under: Satscams and The Siddhi of PR

As if it's going to make a fly's fart worth of a difference, the Maharishi is gifting a dozen lucky countries with their own Vedic geek squads:
In Maharishi's aspiration to bless the world from the ancient Indian heritage—the Vedic Heritage—this Christmas he has planned for the immediate arrival of Vedic Pandits in twelve countries:

1. Latvia 2. Finland 3. Switzerland 4. Bosnia Herzegovina 5. Norway 6. Denmark 7. Ireland 8. Bulgaria 9. Netherland Antilles 10. Guyana 11. Trinidad and Tobago 12. Paraguay
And in a parallel development, a couple of his rich patsies are offering scholarships to learn the fine art of ass-bouncing:
Full scholarships continue to be available from the Howard and Alice Settle Foundation to individuals who would like to learn Yogic Flying and who will commit to join the Invincible America Course for one year.
So that's morons chanting ancient gibberish like it was rocket science and ninnies thinking their bruised butts are creating an effect other than the soreness in their asses.

Those are gifts that keep on giving... material for this blog. Unfortunately, that's just about all they're worth outside the continuing self-aggrandizement of a delusional and exceptionally grandiose old nutbag.

I'm curious to know why you're so annoyed by MMY creating groups of pandits performing traditional Rudrabhishek pujas?

Because pujas are effective as generators of personal devotion. As rituals to control the physical universe; say, provide "invincibility to nations," they suck as much as any other magical fairy tale nonsense.

What is it about MMY's Shiva devotion that you find inconsistent with your own Ma Kali devotion?

His belief that his interpretation of the Vedas is some kind of universal constant that needs to be heeded by all as some sort of "true" blueprint for life.

All buildings facing east? Truly, mystifanatical nonsense.

Are people who perform Ma Kali pujas also just "morons chanting ancient gibberish"?

If they are doing puja to control the physical universe, then yes.

I have heard Maharishi described his pujas and yagyas as the means to control God for the acquisition of money, power for good, etc. Somewhere along the way Maharishi lost it or maybe he never had it to start with and lost the good sense he had. No reason for the rest of us to go down with him.

Well, that's one man's opinion! I no longer "ass bounce" because I got tired of the uncomfortable kundalini type energy associated with it. I no longer practice TM because I found dhyana, I think Maharishi has gone around the bend...But I feel tremendous gratitude for what I did receive from him that helped me so much in my private, non-cultic life!

Thanks, Maharishi! I will always admire and respect what you tried with all your might to give and achieve. May we stand on your shoulders and reach higher!

Dear Jody,

Do you actually know enough about the Vedas to definitively say whether or not the recitation of Sanskrit in prescribed manner does or does not affect the physical universe/surroundings?

If I walk into a room where people have been shouting obscenities at each other, I feel/sense a far different atmosphere than when I enter a temple or even just any place where mantras are constantly recited. It seems to me that words, because they are subtle matter of some kind, do, indeed, affect our physical environment and surroundings to a large degree.

Words have power. Sound has power. Some forms of music cause plants to die, others the plants to thrive. Why not Sanskrit?

I just don't know enough about the science of Veda to say if it does or does not work in the way MMY says it does, or to what degree, etc.

I do know that India, where mantras have been chanted for eons, holds a far different feeling than, say, America, or Europe, where no mantras have been chanted over time. It does not mean that people are living perfectly there, but the feeling, even to many people who don't know why they are sensing it, is palpaple.

Do you think that the contents of the Akasha account for anything? Do you believe that sound is held in the Akasha? That all actions are held there?

Some people are able to enter a room and tell you exactly what has transpired there over the length of time that dwelling has existed. So, to my mind, the imprint of sound/action exists.

Again, whether or not it matters, who knows? I just don't know enough to say.

However, I would, seeing/feeling the effect of sitting in a bar for 6 hours or a temple for 6 hours, tend to think that it probably does matter.

In a bar, people are very worshipful -- of booze, control, personal power, sex, whatever. They talk all sorts of trash. That trash can be felt if you sit there quietly for 6 hours.

In a temple people are equally worshipful -- of God, Love, and speak little or only mantras and prayers. I really do prefer the atmosphere in a temple. Of course, that's probably my limitation, being a simple human being.

I've been in bars that had a temple atmosphere, and I'm sure there are some temples no better than some bars.

But the difference between the atmosphere in a temple and a bar is one thing, the "invincibility" of nations is entirely another.

To believe chanting the Vedas can bring invincibility is nothing more than pure and childish superstition (or a poorly conceived and executed flimflam by the Maharishi.)

What about all the scientific research showing that meditation raises happiness (see Jonathan Haidt's recent book), thickens the neocortex, stimulates the brain ... gibberish it may be, but the Maharishi's method actually works.

(Not that I've ever tried flying, you understand)

You mean the method that the Maharishi marketed works. So what? There are literally thousands of techniques that work at least as well as TM™, skewed propaganda masquerading as "research" notwithstanding.

A calmer mind is one thing, the straight-up myth of invincibility is another.

Hey, at least after 20 something years of asking people for money to do it, Maharishi has finally brought his boy pundits to America! He probably raised a million dollars per pundit!

Ouch!

Come to think of it I have begun to use beano of an evening.

Hope that beano is working for you, Chuck. Too bad there's not a cyber version of beano you could take "of an evening".

Anon, I am not a Veda scholar but I can tell you a thing or two:

First, TMers ain't chanting any veda mantra. If you doubt me you can get it confirmed from any vedic scholar.

Secondly, Maharishi himself cannot chant a single veda mantra, at least no one has ever heard him chanting. Vedic chanting is indeed very melodious to ears but it requires rigorous discipline of years. All this guy did at Jyotirmutt was book keeping of ashram finances. You don't learn vedic chanting through book keeping.

Thirdly, the secret doctrine of TM is not be found anywhere in the vedas. During my visit to India, I have got it confirmed from at least half a dozen authoritative sources including a professor at Madras Sanskrit College.

I have nothing against TM. In fact even now I use it and it works. However, packaging it as 'vedic knowledge' is downright dishonesty.
