Sri Sri In Salt Lake, Again

File under: The Siddhi of PR

Me Me Sri Sri Ravi Shankar was back in that religious ideological desert known as Salt Lake City last Friday night. It makes sense that the monolithic spiritual culture of Utah is parched for the something different that Me Me and his Art of Living org appear to provide.

While speaking to a disappointingly small crowd, Me Me had this to say about success: "success indicates your limitation."

This out of the mouth of a man with his own wall of shame fame awards and accomplishments. It has us thinking this about the fame and glory seeking narcissist: Me Me, heal thyself!

Sri Sri is striving for name and fame. He's just piggy-backing on the peace angle as he is aware that it makes his lusty and shameful rush for fame pretty much unassailable.

In other words, Sri Sri is about self-aggrandizement under the cover of peace-making, which he has failed at in almost every attempt he has made so far, unsurprisingly.

Were you at the event in Utah? How do you know it was a small crowd? With all you say and do to put down all these Gurus and people that are actually working to serve others and helping bring peace to so many individuals, I wonder what you are offering this world. Do you do any service to help others? Anything, that has brought a positive impact to this planet? To your neighbors? Maybe to highlight a few positive things these people have done will be very beneficial to you. It's far better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. How many candles are you lighting in this world my friend?

The article mentioned that it was a smaller crowd than Sri Sri usually speaks to. I expected that with his need to feel the love, he and his people would be disappointed.

With all you say and do to put down all these Gurus and people that are actually working to serve others and helping bring peace to so many individuals, I wonder what you are offering this world.

I am offering my rendering of the truth of Vedanta, which says that Sri Sri is no more God than anyone else. His flourish of white robes is meant to give the impression he is holy. But according to people who have commented here who have had sustained, direct access to the man, he's nothing more than a bundle of ambition hiding under those robes.

Do you do any service to help others? Anything, that has brought a positive impact to this planet?

Well, I rescue snakes that show up in people's houses and yards as a volunteer at a local wildlife center.

To your neighbors?

I drove my landlord's mother to the grocery store a few times when the snow was too deep for her car to manage.

Maybe to highlight a few positive things these people have done will be very beneficial to you.

The only benefit I seek from this is to inform others of the truth of Vedanta and how these big-time gurus like Sri Sri essentially shit on that truth in their mad rush to self-aggrandize, despite their attempt to hide it under the guise of doing good.

It's far better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.

It's far better to take a critical gander rather than accept what has been constructed for you by a masterful public relations staff.

How many candles are you lighting in this world my friend?

One. This blog.

Not only Jody has done this kind of service, so have all of us. The difference is that we have not made millions of dollars doing it, declared ourselves as God, and hired a PR team to make sure as many people in the world know as much about us as possible, leaving out the little weenie part...

Your projection of hatred is noted.

I don't hate Sri Sri or those who follow him. However, I do have a strong aversion to the occluding ideas that occur out of a belief in Sri Sri's holiness. I also have a strong aversion to the idea that self-realization and enlightenment can make anyone any more holy than anyone else is. On the contrary, self-realization informs an individual as to exactly how not special they really are.

My problem with Sri Sri is that he sets an exceedingly bad example of what self-realization actually is. There are also the insider accounts that have graced this blog in the comments.

Sri Sri is a man, not a God. Furthermore, he has been known to be an ambitious man. Not ambitious to bring peace, mind you, but ambitious for recognition by others. To be "big," as they say.

I have to admit that I want to be big too, insofar as getting the word out that self-realization is not what these big-time gurus are presenting it as. But remaing just another obscure voice in the cacophony of the internet is just as welcome a fate.

The most distasteful thing I can imagine is to use people's belief in your divinity to get something from them, whether it be their adoration or their donations.

Which is basically why Sri Sri mostly makes me want to puke.

Of course I am.

Outside of normal privacy considerations, I've made no effort to hide my identity. However, there is no reason to disclose anything more. I'm male, in my 40s and living in New Mexico.

I normally delete comments like yours, Sam, but I wanted people to see the "benefits" of Sudarshan Kriya for themselves.

I think Sri Sri should become a Mormon! That would be fun. God loves fun (as he likes to say). So let's recommend him to the Mormon Church. But whoa!! Wait a sec! First he would have to tolerate the idea that Christ was crucified. (Happy Easter Christians) I heard that he was visiting a catholic place of retreat, giving a course there, and when confronted with the cross in the room, replete with poor Jesus hanging on it, commanded the devotee present "take that off the wall and put it in the closet right now". That devotee did just that, and put it on the floor of the closet. Ravi Shankar was relieved. Hmmmmm. Does it mean that he identified and felt the pain? Or......was he afraid of exorcism (just kidding, AOL fanatics -- try to lighten up a bit guys -- your "God" Sri Sri has a huge following in no danger of changing because of this little blog).

WOW....
I don't know this srisri, only by a friend who first told me about him and was a bit involved in my country about this man's activities,.... and some time later run out of it horrifyied.....
and then of course what I read in this blog, not only from Jody but from many people who were into srisri's hands....
This SAM, being an amazing example of the kind of "holly peace" that srisri teaches.... but of course also all the others srisri's that write here, trying to put Jody down...
We can't blame them... they have put their own true power, and wisdom out there to that man dress in white..... and in order to be someone they have to defend their holly dady...
They get a "holy identity" by being associated to the supposed holy srisri... and thats why they are blind and cant open their capacity to selfenquiring.
Thats what Jody points here.
And the service Jody is doing is far more selfless and beneficial to the few ones who dare to stand alone by themselves and look inside them...often, after having given their power to fake gurus like srisri, and many others, projecting their holyness into those.
These associations often reveal the enormous spiritual ego of oneself,.... who might think that is becoming "a good person", and a "nearly enlighten ed" one , by being close to such a srisri...

I have to say that I so much apreciate when those fellows join and defend their con men/women, and criticize Jody the way they do... Is always a confirmation of what Jody points in this blog,
and Jody's answers are ALWAYS a reaffirmation of what he stands for.

Betty,.... u said that all of us are doing this kind of service to humankind..... Sorry but I don't fit in your all of us. I am not doing any service at all for anyone at all.
I am enjoying so much myself being the most selfish person I've known before...hehehe. Doing any kind of service to others would only be a confirmation of my need of something...

Reading this blog, and posting here is just a selfish act of myself... I really enjoy it, and laugh a lot. And thats why I do.

Thaks Jody. This Blog is GREAT.

And to the one who blames OSAMA,... maybe this give u a different opinion:

Former Val, what are you doing? Trying to foment the antisemitic idea that Israeli spies were behind 911? I read that article a long time ago and did not come to the conclusion that there is a secret Israeli 911 conspiracy. There are lots of idiots in the world and these guys who were laughing are apparently some of them, and that's the end of that story.

Sure, my need for amusement, but not of doing any service to anyone as our friend Betty suggested.

Don't forget I am very selfish.

Durga, your extreme answer, doesn't surprise me at all.
Don't give for granted what dady Bush say to you.
I don't know if we would ever know the truth of what happened, but I don't believe a word of Bush's mouth. And the story that he set up is very inconsistent. Despite, I have my reasons to believe that Osama didn't do that.
But I don't give much power either to conspiracy's theories, is only information, out of some people's research, that for me makes more sense than other information... but at the end, is only information.
I don't want to convince you about anything, for the same reason that I am not convinced about anything at all. only open up other possibilities, so that one's beliefs can shake.
The world is full with idiots, and those mossad agents, filming and clowning in front of what the most fool man on earth would have been horrifyied.... were probably beyond madness.

end of the story?

Betty B, I don't take for granted at all what daddy Bush says. I've had some experience myself with living in other cultures and learning other languages. In fact, a lot of experience. My opinion is that the situation in mid east is so f-cked up because each culture has its own narrative about truth and is not willing to examine its veracity. Until people can see from the vantage point of the other, there's no chance for resolution. I think this is what needs to be addressed rather than publishing stories about the secret this or that that was really behind 911, thus inflaming more hatred. There may be conspiracies around other acts of recent violence, but I think the case of 911 is pretty clear.

Durga, you seem to be quite opinionated.

And accusing me of being antisemitic, just because I don't believe the story that Bush made up, is quite something,... yes I heard that if one mentions anything that could question any jew's behaviour would automatically label one as antisemitic....

I am only pointing out some information that I jumped by, because aparently the only point for SAM and u is that OSAMA is evil. And when you say that, according to you, you are perpetuating the hatred against arabs. So wacth up your own words.

And for your own info, my lover is israeli, my neibourghs also and they come every day for coffee at my place, and i like them a lot, my closest friend is lebanese, I have some good friends from Syria, and I went to the wedding of Osama's nephew in Jeddha cause she is a good friend from university, and I have no hatred nor opinion of "good" or "bad" whatsoever about any cultural/ethnic/racial group on this earth.

While the Bush government obviously spins things to foster paranoia, I think it's patently clear that militant Islamists conspired to hijack planes and fly them into buildings. They were successful, end of story.

To answer Betty Boom: I am not Jewish. I was raised Roman Catholic. What I am is (somewhat) sensible. The conspiracy theories about 9-11 are most definitely not. Here we discuss gurus who claim to be more God than you and I, making the present discussion way off topic.

ah, the great man is about to speak in Singapore... do you think he's on an international tour, like the Rolling Stones or something?

At 7/18/2007 1:33 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

In answer to the previous question, yes, Ravi Shankar is on a world tour, almost constantly it seems, unlike the Rolling Stones whose self-promotion is obviously not as important as taking drugs, sleeping with beautiful women, etc.

But I digress. I attended an AOL course, and one of the (albeit unoriginal and obvious) virtues it teaches, is to disregard the ego and to do things of concrete value rather than shallow self-agrandizement. These and other ideals (which I, an I suspect possibly Jody, etc. as well agree with) of the AOL courses seem in contradiction of course to the massive personality cult surrounding Ravi Shankar and the claims of divinity made by his followers. I personally do not consider him divine, since I believe in the non-existance of the divine, and choose to believe that he is immensly fallible, as no-one is infallible and those is positions of influence in my experience are often the most corrupt, but that is circumstantial. I also hold that all forms of organised 'spirituality' are by their nature pernicious social evils, including the Roman Catholic church and other large scale religious groups. The previous bloggers who spoke in defence of Ravi Shankar by rather ineloquently attacking Jody I suspect are of limited intelligence and seem to be behaving in contradiction to what I percieve as the ideals taught in AOL courses. They are simply offended that you insulted their guru, which is merely egotism by proxy. Many of the ideals that are taught on these courses are ideals that should be apparent to any decent human being with some kind of basic morality and self worth, but they do actually get people to behave better in many cases. Speaking as someone who has enjoyed a variety of psychoactive chemicals in my past I have to say that Sudarshan Kriya is the cheapest, healthiest and one of the most pleasant ways of getting high I have encountered. I am willing to believe that there are more profound benefits than that, but since LSD and DMT have both invoked highly 'spiritual' experiences, that is by no means a put-down coming from me. Apologies for the long comment, and for the anonymity.
