"Holosync" Harris Holohammered On Twitter

File under: Gurubusting, Gurus Clockin' Dollars and The Siddhi of PR

As the regular reader of this blog knows, we generally go after spiritual teachers who claim to be God and use this claim as their primary marketing conceit. Woo-woo noise peddler and "The Secret" star Bill Harris doesn't appear to quite fit that bill, but like most others who make your spirituality their business, it has become quite clear that he's all about the money. At the moment, he's threatening legal action against Gp pal Duff McDuffee, a personal development industry critic and partner with Eric Schiller in a blog called Beyond Growth. A post McDuffee made on November 13 this year criticized the way Harris markets his "Holosync" sound meditation cds, also noting that up until the Death Lodge incident of October 8, 2009, James Arthur Ray was an enthusiastic endorser of Harris' products, (as well as being his ex-partner.) [Ed.note: As it turns out, James Arthur Ray had Holosync sessions scheduled during the days leading up to the Death Lodge tragedy.]

The result of all this is now a cease-and-desist letter demanding the removal and retraction of McDuffee's blog post, all at the approval of Harris and his lawyers. The heavy-handedness of the move belies a man desperate to protect a shaky business, and while it's definitely not pleasant to receive a letter like this, its claims appear to have more holes than a 20-year-old tin pail at the bottom of Lake Erie. [Ed.note: According to those in the know, Harris did about 20-million last year, so the shakiness isn't preventing him from getting his grind on.]

Since this gauntlet has been dropped there has been a Kelvin wave of support for McDuffee and against Harris on Twitter. The viral nature of this bad PR has the potential to do a lot more damage to the claimant than the defendant, but somehow, we don't think Harris has enough of a view around his own self-image to recognize bad PR if it took him out to an expensive dinner and then back to a hotel room for an all-limits-transgressed romp.

And don't forget to note that Bill Harris has close business ties to Genpo Roshi (of Big Mind fame).

I tackle this troubling situation on my blog in this post:

One beautiful thing about the cease and desist order: it gives examples of "defamatory" statements made about Bill Harris (the definition of "defamatory" explicitly requires a statement to be false). One of these examples, provided by the lawyers, is statments "saying that our client viciously attacks those who criticize his marketing."

How could anyone get the idea that Harris viciously attacks critics?

If Harris doesn't see the hypocrisy of calling that "defamation"... it'd be nice if he'd at least learn to appreciate the irony.

suFirst time it may hurt a bit to read something nasty about oneself on the internet but once it is done then one become shameless and infact get even bolder than before.

All the scammers you criticize here may not find it very arduous to resist and continue with their usual scams. Neither scammies take these internet stuff seriously nor the scammers. But only purpose this blog like this may serve most can see is that all the disgruntled ex-this and ex-that which went with lots of idiotic dreams and believed the scammer for a good substantial years and then one day get rejected and upon rejection start sending anti messages about the scammers.

Otherwise how to explain this bunnies which were in a ashram for 3 to 15 years and then realize that they are bunnies ???

But probably you should realize that this one useless time you spend on both these scammers and scammies because its something stupid that goes on between them and then when something goes wrong then they come looking for protagonists, like you ?

I find this whole exercise a useless piece of bulcrap. I say this after reading all the articles past few months in many anti guru sites, including yours.

ScamGurus are still blazing their trails and scammies and bunnies still throng them everywhere. no stopping this. I for one not going to waste my time on this...

Yout choice, anon.

For the rest of us who have some awareness of the ongoing BS being constantly perpetrated on the world by both religious and commercial scammers, and know that tolerance of this BS comes from our own flawed understanding of both the vulnerabilities and strengths of human nature, we'll continue to learn from and appreciate the brave souls who waste their time exposing this nonsense for the destructive BS that it is.

Ignorance is bliss--until it bites you in the butt. Learning is painful until you consider the greater pain of the alternative.

Ma'am ! you said it so profoundly that one should get bitten in the arse. Till then one is ignorant. I mean the same. Till one gets hit by a scam the scammed is quite blissfully happy being a bunny.

So whats the point of all this exposure ? I rarely see anyone being prevented going anywhere. Whenever I tried to bring this blog or other anti blogs, the reply comes pat from the bunny, "some frustrated people write frustrated things" and they dont care a damn.

Also Ma'am what you dont figure is that every time some thing is up against some scammer on the net, he takes it to his advantage. because these days the scammer value goes up directly proportionate to the anti-stories found about him on the net. After all Krishna, jesus buddha all were condemened in their times by the "ignorant" people.

The scammer and the scammed are quite clever now to make use of anything to grab that pie in the sky, which includes blogs like this. It works to their advantage, kind of free publicity....

Like most things, publicity is a double-edged sword. Scammers know this, why else do they try to shut down the free speech of blogs such as this one?

I long ago quit trying to convert the True Believer, there's none so blind as those who think they know the absolute truth, but for the waverers and doubters and those who are beginning to see a bit further than the myths perpetrated by the scammers?----these blogs serve a much-needed purpose. If a doubter starts to read and think about what is presented here he might get his own critical faculties working again and regain his ability to think for himself.

For myself, I keep reading just to remind myself that no-one has a handle on absolute truth and that if I want to keep an independent mind I can never stop thinking. These blogs are important, far more important than the fawning sites dedicated to the god-man of the day.

The scam always needs both the scammers and scammies because it takes two to tango. The scammies repent when they are bitten in their a$$, ie when they dont get their hose pipe supply of koolaide. The disgruntled turns mostly pessimistic and angry and may resolve not to be spiritual anymore because of some bitter experience.

I know my brother who was playing some big role in AOL and one day he came home and tore away pictures of Sr Sri Ravishankar he had stuck in his room. Since then I notice him to be just plainly angry and pissed about anything spiritual.

I wonder whats the learning in this when a person became so closed and mutative? His anger is not about SSR being a scammer of some project or enlightenment but his anger is that SSR did not smile at him for more than 6 months in the last year and kind of ignored him. Is there any true learning possible for him?

He may happy to read anti stuff about SSR in these posts but his understanding of scam still remains far different from what actually the posts intend to mean.

My take is that the scammers are no more afraid of any anti news spread on net. SSR, Nithyanandam, Jaggi, and the likes derive great pleasure being projected negatively. it adds to their mystery. They are like martyrs of their own cause in the eyes of million bunnies.

Yes, and disillusionment is often a first and painful step, with lots of bitterness and recrimination involved. Its a learning process if you are willing to learn from it. SSR is a personality cult, your brother would benefit from learning to separate the message from the messenger.
Bill Harris is positioning himself the same way, as an enlightened type, in order to sell his pricy and untested products. No wonder he goes after anyone pointing this out, it hurts the bottom line.
