Hindus Assail Guruverts

File under: Gurus Clockin' Dollars

Hindus in India are in an uproar over a new Ford auto commercial. A Shiva statue appears behind the car, with a character who appears to be a guru discussing the good karma of owning a Ford automobile. Various Hindu organizations are taking it up with the government despite the fact that the commercial was created by Hindus. In a quick ass-covering, a Ford spokesman claims that the ad was only meant to run a short time.

Leave it to fundamentalist Hindus is be as blind to irony as they are to reason.

Hello chap!

Amusing links - although I ought to point out that Shiva is actually a god, not a guru. There's a quantum difference - small but significant. Can you imagine the Catlicks out in protest if Jesus was used to promote sandals, or something?

Yeah, I don't get it. Where's the irony?

While David at Boing Boing got it a bit mixed up, it's fairly clear in the post that the Shiva statue (or murti) stands behind the car as the "guru" talks about the car. The irony is in the fact that it was Hindus, albeit probably younger, more progressively-minded Hindus, that made the commercial.
