Raid On Aleph!
File under: Gurus Doin' Time
Jittery Japanese officials raided 11 Aleph compounds yesterday, apparently afraid the remains of the Aum Supreme Truth sect were planning a retaliation action in response to guru Shoko Asahara's pending execution. Considering Aum's last action, we can't really blame them:
Justice Minister Seiken Sugiura warned that the bearded cult founder, whose real name is Chizuo Matsumoto, still wields significant influence over the 1600-member sect...A subway-gassing terrorist guru on death row still regarded as God by 1600 people in Japan and 350 in Russia. That is extreme gurudom.
