It's always "God bless you" from these kind of guys infected with the disease of being true believers. Doesn't much matter if they are believers in a Guru, in Jesus, or Krishna. It's always "God Bless you" turned into a curse.

At 3/23/2009 11:19 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, it's because they are so blinded by their guru-lighter!!! so they instantly need to curse anyone who says anything bad about their beloved guru... like it is a personal offense. Not seeing how much hypocrisy surrounds their gullible devotion to this big-time-liar... They take no responsibility for their own life...yeah, he will lead you to your own deludedness, just get ready for the thick fog of fear and guilt. His un-holy ME ME is a tragic narsissic desperado. He cannot hide his fully blown up EGO any more.

Don't these people see that the only person who needs a MASTER is a SLAVE? What ever happened to critical thinking?

Critical thinking is the very first thing that a cult leader like Sri Sri wants to eliminate from your mind. That way, he has removed the only thing that can show you what a fraud he is.

The ideal of the Spiritual Master may take a beating when applied to men like Sri Sri, Maharishi, and others of that ilk, but it remains a genuine and pristine relationship when applied to someone genuine. Much like the ideals of marriage and family, there may not be any storybook perfection to be found but it is still a real and viable oportunity, if both the student and the teacher are genuine. This may be rare but it is possible, in my opinion.

Numerous times I've explained this to AoL folk. It's all over this site.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, as an example of nondual realization, leaves a very warped point of reference for his students. Sri Sri has hoisted himself on a pedestal, allowing others to believe he can perform miracles, that he is God, and his every action is divinely inspired. But this raja isn't wearing any clothes. This is reflected brightly in the manner and content of his public relations efforts, what he's said at his public appearances, and in the stories of many ex-devotees who have left comments here.

I don't hate Hinduism by any contortion of that statement. It's absolutely the opposite, I love Hindu thought, especially Vedanta, Tantra and Shaktism. It's been an overwhelming passion for over half my life. In that time, I've reached a few conclusions that call into question many commonly accepted ideas in popular spiritual culture. Sri Sri is emblematic of most, if not all of them.

The definition of "guru" provided by the example of Sri Sri and others like him is much more likely to impede a reckoning of nondual truth than help. Ostensibly, that's what gurus are supposed to be helping us with. Sri Sri and the rest pay lip service to that, but when you compare the message of their image to the message of nondual truth, the gap is eff'n huge.

@ jody i do agree with certain points you have made . ok so if someone is doing meditation and teching meditation like sri sri , especially in in the indian tradition, then why not put him on a pedestal . We even put our regular teachers and on a huge pedestal (even when we in school) so why not sri sri because he teaches meditation?"Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, as an example of nondual realization, leaves a very warped point of reference for his students. Sri Sri has hoisted himself on a pedestal" well indeed it is himas well as his disciples who have ....and as for sri sri himself, he also assumes that the volunteers / etc of his organization use btheir brains once in a way....and it is finally good to know that you atleast know the difference between the various philosophies of Hinduism unlike many who criticise Guru's.

I really doubt if SSRS is a advocate of non dual realization. He has hardly spoken on the non dual topics. A couple of much hyped talks on upanishads are very badly presented by him without getting to the depth anywhere but just swimming on the surface. I have listened to him personally many times but im sure he has not even quoted any non dual versus. He mostly teached the path of ashtanga yoga, where the postures, mudras, breathing, are in primary focus. He deals with people who like to listen to some good bhajans from the AOL groups and good solace from SSRS.

I had witnessed once a crowd of 30 thousand people where SSRS told to close the eyes for sometime and pass all the problems to him(to SSRS). It was funny and childish but the crowd was a gross one that it was just doing exactly the same.

Yet another time he told the crowd to make one wish (in his presence) during the meditation and it will come true. I dont know if everyone took it seriously or were just having fun like me but certainly a lot of them looked quite serious.

Lately this wish fulfilling technique is packaged by Nithya too for a price. Its called "kalpataru" Where you will find him seated on a suspended throne, after many curtains open one after other. Quite a dramatic one where the pictures and videos are ABSOLUTELY BANNED.

I cant see non dual teaching or learning anywhere with SSRS or most of them featured here. Then why do you make such a big fuss about them ??

The ONLY thing Sri Sri has is the look. Any genuineness is ENTIRELY in the mind of the devotee. Sri Sri is "well loved" ONLY because he looks like peoples' ideas about what a divine guru is supposed to look like.

He is a fauxru, straight-up.

The sense to see a fraud when I see one, and the good sense to know that lots of people are often quite wrong together. There were millions of Nazis at one time who all loved Hitler.

Sri Sri is camouflaging his fraud behind the "love" screen, just like his guru the Maharishi, and every other big-time fauxru in the fake avatar business. This is the very first principle of false gurudom: make it all about "love" and few will question your actions.

You are as see-through as your guru, like a freshly washed window on a warm summer's day.

Jody isn't comparing SSRS to Hitler, he's merely pointing out the fact that the argument "he must be good because so many people like him" is entirely false.

Having been in AOL and having known many people in the organisation, as well as devotees, here is what I feel. It is easy to find negatives in the AOL org just as it is easy to find it anywhere else.

If you come just for doing the Basic course or Part I, you can continue the practice and feel content. The cost is certainly less than what you pay for many other similar programmes and the benefit is there.

Unfortunately, what happens is a lot more of indoctrination once you go through the programme. And while I would not like to call Sri Sri a fraud, it is obvious that there is a lot of theatre in what he does. At the same time he comes off as a reasonably warm and simple person and appears a little astonished by the amount of attention and fame that AOL has got.

Then there is the attempt at extraction of money once a person is hooked. The pressure starts building up, do this course and that and that. Things like the Guru Puja are ridiculous, as also the DSN. The advanced course is good and I found it fun. Darned if I am going to repeat it. Sahaj Samadhi is a straight lift from TM.

In moments of candour some teachers say that the Basic course is all you need and that is the truth. Go for only that and stay free from any illusions of enlightenment from Sri Sri. Only a lit candle can light others. Avoid the long Kriya. Do the Advanced course, only if you are so inclined. If you are not strong and easily brainwashed, avoid any contact with AOL once you do the Basic course. If anyone visits you and suggests that you join them for some programme or the other, after you have done the basic course, shoo them off very politely and with a smile!

This is a perfect and unbiased opinion. I have observed the same. Do the basic course. But do not fall in trap. learn the yoga, pranayam and sudarshan kriya (its a sort of pranayam) - [I THINK, RAMDEV BABA IS MUCH BETTER IN THIS AREA, SO PREFER HIM.] but do not attend their Long Kriya or Satsang, once you join them, they will extract money in this or that form, pressurise you to do various courses. and the volunteers and local teachers are really innocent persons who are thinking that they are doing something great Seva for their Guru.
The real culprits are sitting in Banglore Ashram. Its funny to call that place Ashram. There are posh bungalows for Senior Teachers and Other close persons. 2 artificial lakes, many cars and most importantly 2 Elephents.
Earlier, the elephents are kept by Kings (only king can afford the elephants) Why a Sanyasi need elephants? and they are fed by the course fees and donations of the innocent public who think that their money is spent for developement project.
THERE IS ONLY ONE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT AND THAT IS BANGLORE ASHRAM. ANY ONE WHO HAS VISITED THE PLACE CAN SURELY CONFIRM THIS.

@ dada ok so you make some accusations about the aol ashram having elephants : numerous hindu temples also have elephenats . Ok i agree the ashram is very posh and beautiful so arent all the temples of india beautiful?i am not comparing ashram 2 a temple , but there is a temple called the golden temple and also on plated with 22 carat gold in vellore all this was also done with doonations only, ok rural development does happen and that is the genuine seva of aol, trust me during long kriya or any aol meet there is no compulsion to donate money and yes the advanced course is fantastic so is the yes+ and the basic course beyond that its quite a lot of indoctrination as mentioned but yes aol has its positives and negatives ..some senior tecahers have given up their lives and family and everything to teach aol courses so isn't it sri sri's responsibity to make them comfortabele? the so called bungalowas have a small room ,a washroom thats it smaller then even a flat the aam aadmi lives in today .ok some senior teachers who still have small incomes frm shres /funds/family business ahv ebaught bigger rooms to make themselves comfortable and yes Guru Puja maybe ditto TM, Sri Sri is just following some of what his Guru has told him to carry forward... and yes some volunteers are really hard workin you must ask them.. and also after doing the basic course, yes+ or whatever course of aol u have done there is absolutely no compulsion to do much after that but i find going for a long kriya once i way is quite harmless and quite deep meditation that the usual home kriya and moreover you get to keep refreshing the practice of the basic course...@jody:sri sri doesnt speak much on/of non duality except in some few odd talks....otherwis edespite its negatives i still feel aol is a gr8 organisation to be part of ask me im far away frm home in australia and aol ppl have been more helpful than even my known friends so it indeed is a good support system nd yes i deeply belive in the philosophy of sikhism and hinduism and im an arya samaji by birth i actually donot need so much of "guruism" but i believe and follow sri sri's philosophy to a certain extent .. ok so he may be extremely charismatic but so is amitabh bacchan ,tom cruise, and a zillion others.....and despite being an aolite , i do not live in denial....

I agree with the first part. As far as the second part is concerned, the cost is comparable to any other elite meditation course.

@Dada:

"The real culprits are sitting in Banglore Ashram."

Including the one who heads all those crooks.

It is impossible to believe that the guilt inducing marketing techniques of AoL and cultish veneration of SSRS, his mother, his father, his sister, his brother-in-law do not have blessings of SSRS.

@Anon:

"trust me during long kriya or any aol meet there is no compulsion to donate money.."

You are either too new to AoL or too brainwashed to see through the subtle and not-so-subtle constant psychological pressure applied on participants to donate money or to join new AoL courses (meaning more money) or to bring new recruits (meaning yet more money).

Its all about money, honey!

"ok rural development does happen and that is the genuine seva of aol,.."

Oh, come on! Have you ever visited any village that has been developed by AoL money? What projects have been taken up by AoL in those villages?

Let me educate you on this. The only village that has been "developed" by AoL money is Udi Palya in Bangalore where a water supply project was taken by AoL. That too was not intentional. It was a by-product of the water supply system erected for Bangalore Ashram.

Other than this, every single "rural development project" taken by AoL is on personal initiative of AoL devotees without ANY financial assistance from AoL.

"yes Guru Puja maybe ditto TM, Sri Sri is just following some of what his Guru has told him to carry forward..."

In that case, basic courtesy demands that they acknowledge the source. Do they? Heck! Even though SSRS got trained by MMY, he has never publicly admitted the fact. So much for gratitude to guru! And this from a person who has no shame in being worshipped by his followers like God.

"i still feel aol is a gr8 organisation to be part of ask me im far away frm home in australia and aol ppl have been more helpful than even my known friends"

Yes. A lot of people from Indian diaspora feel nostalgic about India and want to get connected to their Indian roots. AoL has recognized the emotional vacuum of this group and very successfully tapped this market segment.

While I figured the contemptuous side of SSRS, Im sure I would be looking at him with awe and with dozen other feelings. And if he is going to say to me that he is god then I may even agree on his face. Because who else but only people with god like qualities can garner so much attention..

Sri Sri has something called Guru Thathva. That is the reason he has the following he has. And despite all the criticism that comes from people on this forum, he is destined to teach a few millions his technique.

It is not important where he learnt it from or whether it was 'cognised' by him (read that somewhere in one of the plugs for AOL ). The short kriya is a healthy practice and has benefited me in addition to several thousand others. If there had been no benefit, his following would certainly not have grown.

However, that is no reason to go Guru Gaga over him! Use your intelligence and you will stay sane and balanced.

In a sense I think you're on the right track here. I do sometimes feel like a grief stricken lover who's had a tiff---but not with any of the flimflams masquerading as god's mouthpiece on earth.

I often feel separated from something indefinable, the great pulse of life that animates everything but I have come to see this feeling of separation as part of the human condition--something that no flimflam guru, no matter how charismatic and expensive, can cure.
What the flimflams are extraordinarily adept at is spotting this very normal and human emotional need and exploiting it for fame and profit.

He has powers, he has following and he is doing good to the world. Let us leave it at that. Anything more, his past, his future etc. are irrelevant. Let us live in the Present moment!

Sure dude, live in the present moment with all the built up suppressions that you can take. Deny the fact that so many AoL people are guilt ridden, fear struck and live with a numberless unrealistic beliefs around the impact their beloved guru has on their lifes. I know someone who needed psyciatric help after a DSN course... Live in the present, be oblivious to reality, live with a plastic smile, don't allow any single doubt to seep through, deny all negative things you hear.. and keep on believing this man is doing GOOD! Don't question it - he is god doing good... very much needed, because God him self is unable... simply look at the mess he made... see messaiah in white robes alive today.. Jody is simply perceptive, and the masses are mislead, mistaken and ensnared by this ambitious world-concourer. Have you seen how many honorary prices he displalys on his pages? A true master wouldn't care less... And you think the man him self is innocent?

Some of Sri Sri's followers are well-meaning, but a number of the Westerns who have been with him awhile seem to have HUGE psychological problems that they have not addressed. If he's so great why hasn't he "fixed" these people? Or is this a case of the inmates being in charge of the nut house? Doesn't surprise me that people need psychological counseling after a course. They probably needed the help before but were told to live in the present moment and keep smiling. Now they are zombies for sri sri.

SSRS himself once said that only the MASTER is the truest and closest companion so remain totally focussed on him. today, i am all alone,middle-aged in the process of rebuilding my life.i gave the best years of my life to him.it landed me in this mess.dont make the mistake i made. only if you manage to make it in the top rung of the ladder do you stand to gain. for that it is not necessary to believe the bullshit of aol.treat it simply as a career.ofcourse, dont be naive and tell the others that you dont believe. just manupalate. that is how Hazra,Bawa,Kakkar, stood to gain. But better to just get out and rebuild your life.it is hard but gives you immense freedom.

because if it was for war, noone would be decieved

so satan comes in a form that noone can recognise and his mission

TO DECEIVE.....

sure you wouldnt think prem rawat had a past looking at him, deceiving millions via his tv series, sure he's more powerful then his critics, which are ever so easily dismissed off-handedly....

it was only after the holocaust the world saw the evil of hitler and it will be only after millions have been duped by these false christs that they will wake up.

god knows what the false christs gain by deceiving innocent people
but then again it isnt god who is behind it....

To the dude who said, Take all the suppressions etc. I have quietly exited from the hurly burly of AOL. I don't believe a whit about this guru being everything stuff. I feel a distinct lack of vibes in the present Ashram. The old campus had a certain quality about it, even the trees seemed to be dancing during Satsangs. So be it. My point is that if SSRS floats someone's boat, it is between that dude and the Guru dude. If he does nothing to you, stay away. You cannot prevent other people's karma from happening to them. If they are destined for good karma with SSRS, they will get it. If they are destined to be cheated, it will happen to them with him or anyone else.

Don't you really think that it would have been better if people spoke the truth they saw, before it all got too messy?? Yeah, we are all one divine energy - including the bad guys. It is all a dream... time to wake up!! and in waking up, someone wants to hit the sleeping crowd on their head with a stick. TAke no offense.. The Bhagvad Gita talks about doing your Karma or action and not worrying about the fruits. Similarly do your bit even if some guys are going to get cheated by SSRS or anyone else. Jody is doing his bit and so am I and you. So keep cool dude! Stay alert to cheats yourself and tell others also, if you have any first hand experience about SSRS or his minions. first, of all i'm not a dude, if there's a female equivalent word for it, i still wouldnt want to be called that.

second, noone is raving and ranting.
i'm merely pointing out the truth and i know that its going to be a bitter pill for the masses.
but by saying it the way it is, maybe the truth will eventually help those that need it the most.

i'm not ranting and raving but it may come across like that to those people who are seriously deluded.
to call a spade, a spade is not ranting, its stating the obvious.

and you seem to be quoting bhagavad gita all the time, but you dont even know what it means.
why do you think krishna eventually led the war? why didnt he just stay silent and blame karma?

your reasoning is laughable,
you've taken the very very easy way out using religion as a crutch!

even lord krishna wouldnt agree with you!

Ok, Dudess, like in duchess! Really, you are getting a little irritated. Like I said, I do not condone wrongdoing or cheating. However, you have to accept that a few people will get cheated however much you resist. Same way the more attention you give to someone like SSRS, who you believe is a fraud or worse, the stronger he will become. Accept that there is merit in the Kriya, regardless of its origins. Sri Sri's following stems from genuine benefits that millions have found in it and in the presence of him, they believe to be a master. Regardless of whether you believe in it or not, and I don't believe he is a Master, his following is real as also the benefits of the Kriya. That there are wrongs going on in his ashram is true and I have first hand knowledge of many things. However, the fact is that there are wrongs everywhere even in professionally administered places like ISKCON. That people will get cheated is also true and however much we get agitated in fora such as this one, we are not in a position to change the cheating part. That's the Karma I am talking about. There is a certain inevitability and regardless of your attempts, some poor sods will lose money. So, knowing that move on in life and do not get cheated yourself.

whoeever said i was talking about only sri sri? i am putting a whole bunch in the same basket.

and the kind of karma i'm talking about is similar to what lord krishna was talking about.

something you have a long long way to go before you can understand it.

i'm talking about making the impossible, possible. when all the odds are against you, fate and destiny. when your enemy is bigger and stronger then you are.
when all the signs are that you are not going to win.

in such a situation, you can still win. and that is the situation in which lord krishna found himself and then he led the war and thankfully won!

you are talking of giving up!
let the dice fall where they will, sort of thing, let things run their course kinda thing.

thats precisely what the bhagavad gita teaches you not to do!

imagine if lord krishna thought like you, 'oh poor me, what can i do, things just happen'
the kauravas and not the pandavas would have certainly won the war.

go back and do alot alot of reading dude!

To Anon 4/13/2009, the Dudess!

So go tilt against the windmills! Hope that you will win because Krishna is with you.
Hopefully you won't get a heart attack, with your angry attitude!

oh really! it's quite clear who is the one with the angry attitude.

i'm fine, its you who seem to have a problem, first somehow i appear to you as irritated and then angry.

this is your problem because its certainly not coming from my side.

sort yourself out.

get yourself some brains, a backbone, a spine and a lot else besides before trying to argue with me.

actually even then, don't bother.

and the rest of your comments for tilting with the windmills or whatever??!!??

your attempt at humour is as pathetic as you are.

To Dude who is raving about cheating... you are such a hypocrite.. saying who ever deserves to be cheated will!!! and so??? what is cheating to you... ??Are we not cheating eachother all the time out of a sleepwalking ignorant state of mind...!!! The crunch or crutch is that AoL people have very little knowingness about MIND.. If they had, they would look through the silly mindgames, superstitions, ambitions, greed, cheats, moneyscams, sexual repressions, and more... and laugh of the whole silly thing - Sri Sri being the most silly cartoon figure the world have seen in a long time... He goes on benefiting the world, by robbing them from seeing things clearly for them selves...what a cheat!!

I know Sudarshan Kriya and how breathing in intervalls for 50 min. gives a "rebirthing effect" by flooding the cells with oxygen. It is not HIM doing anything, he even forgets how it is done!!! (believe it or not) the Kriya is ancient and the world is not being saved by AoL... nor cheated!!! It is blind people leading the blind, a classical sheep thing in a wolf expensive clothing.

i would like to apologize for this jerk's mindless comments.

to reiterate:

lord krishna doesnt have to be with anybody, we have to be with him

lord krishna doesnt have to be on anybody's side, we have to be on his

lord krishna doesnt have to follow anybody, we have to follow him

to talk with an idiot, is bad enough. but to try and argue or worse still, debate with one, is sheer lunacy in itself.
there is no sense in it, because there's no sense in them!

to laugh and ignore them is probably the best thing to do.

and now to dumb down the conversation to the level even mr windy bum (or is it mr wind mill)will understand.

actually, i think i'll settle for mr windy brain (because there's a swift breeze blowing between the ears)

mr windy brain you talk aload of (take your pick): humbug, baloney, poppycock, crap, drivel, dribble and a lot more besides i cannot print.

comprende? oh i'm sorry, understand?

notice also, how i am having to defend lord krishna from his own devotees!

Jody writes shit about gurus, and when anyone defends the guru using strong language, he cries "aha, you broke; your guru is obviously worthless." If the guru defends him/herself (even mildly) he cries, "Aha, you care about my opinion, you are not a true guru" (like with Rasa).
His standard is that he can say anything in any tone, and his message is still valid, but not so for gurus or their disciples.

I think the opinion has been expressed here that (at least what I understand of the opinion) Sudarshan Kriya is a practice that works on the placebo effect, and is as good (or bad) as any other meditation-type practice. Is there any anecdotal evidence or opinion that regular long term practice of SK is actually harmful for the mental and physical health of the practitioner, discounting any other (harmful) group/Guru based effects (talking about the practice only)?

First some disclosure - I have done multiple AOl courses though I I am part of any inner circle. I have met maybe a couple of 100 people form AOl till now and hold a lot of them in high esteem. I have also helped organize events, sell courses and have met Sri Sri about 6-7 times.

The good stuff...
the practices that I have learnt (and sometimes practice) are meditative in nature and in my (humble) opinion, they are like any other good meditation practices. The Part 2 course has been really effective retreat for me and I repeat it frequently.
I have listened to a lot of his lectures and found him witty, knowledgeable and pragmatic. I have learnt from those lectures. I really don't know if they are accurate or not, but some of them are good.
I also believe that most of the people I have met in AOl are really trying to do good...sometime misdirected, sometime not.

The not so good...
Blind faith is encouraged and questions are not encouraged. i have seen this more in the ranks than with Sri Sri.
All AOl events are always portrayed as huge successes even when some of them (as they would be) are dismal failures. This exaggeration borders on falsehood sometimes.
A lot of people in AOL propagate the notion of Sri Sri having miraculous powers and miracles happening with AOL people. I hope they would stay away from that.
Also, there is a tendency to revert to Hindu rituals (like conducting Pujas and chanting) and that confuses this movement with a Hindu religious movement
Also, there is enormous pressure to enroll other people making me feel like I am attending a Multi Level marketing Meeting.

All in all, I think it has a lot of positive impact and they seriously need to look at curtailing some of their practices if they want to be a successful cross religion & international organization

I really appreciate this column. I think a balanced perspective is most precious thing that can be given to us. The only thing I object to is overt expressions of hate and ridicule that get thrown around. I would request at least the blog owner to moderate all of us to a constructive dialogue on this topic.

The sudarshan kriya taught at the AOL basic course helped me get rid of my joint pains - it works pretty nicely. My ortho made me get scans of my very painful left knee which was work out due to excessive cycling, said I'd need to get a knee replacement done in a few years (I am 44 now). However with the daily kriya practice, I haven't had pain in the last 7 years now.

I don't care much for the long kriyas and frankly I don't jive well with that guru-worshipping crowd of followers at the satsang, but I can tell you there's a core of truth in his teaching (books) and the kriya has really helped me.

I haven't had pain in the last 7 years now.

A few months ago I heard about the case of a man with a bad knee. He joined a study of knee surgery techniques. Some subjects got real surgery, some only a small incision and no knee repair. This man didn't get the surgery, yet after he "recovered" from the simple incision, he proclaimed himself cured of knee problems.

Our bodies can do a lot we don't understand yet. I feel it's more likely you a have benefitted from a placebo effect rather than anything having to do with a simple and rather unoriginal breathing practice.
