Amma: Mistress Of The Hindu Right

File under: Amma All-Over-The-Planet and Backroom Gurudom

Based on what's come out of discussions in the comments of the last few posts, it's becoming clear that Ammachi is the favorite daughter of the radical Hindu fundamentalist right in India even while she feigns the peaceful Goddess of Hugs in the U.S.

From last week's Tehelka piece:
Mata Amritanandamayi Devi née Ms Radhamani fits Malayali decadence to a T. She is reckoned to be one of the country’s richest gurus. She is a handmaiden of the Sangh Parivar, especially the VHP, with its global fund-flows.
We dug a little deeper [Ed.note: We know it's very uncharacteristic of us.] and discovered just who the VHP are:
On December 6, 1992 the Babri Mosque was demolished by a large group of Hindus, who had been camped out at the site for weeks. Members of the VHP were allegedly part of this large group, as reported by the Human Rights Watch...

The demolition of the mosque in 1992 led to violence. Muslim mobs took to rioting in various parts of the country leading to communal violence and resultant police action. Over 900 people were killed across the country in riots and police action. The Liberhan Commission headed by Justice Liberhan was constituted to investigate the whole episode. A large number of VHP workers testified before the commission.

The incident at the disputed structure came as a shock to many Indians, who had known the VHP as a peaceful organization...

Continually criticizing its political ally the BJP for acting too slowly on the Ram temple issue, conversions and a uniform civil code, the VHP demands legislation from Parliament authorizing the temple construction, and the proclamation of a Hindu Rashtra, literally the "Hindu Nation," in Bharat and explains it as a statement of cultural nationalism
Imagine the most radical Christian fundamentalist politicians in the States and you've got an idea about the goals of the BJP. Imagine a group more radical even than that and you know something about the VHP.

And now you know who their queen is...

Amma, in all sense of the word, is as sweet as Amritham (honey).

Jody, you'd better watch it. If you haven't received threats from Mamacchi's peeps before, you just might now.Think of Amma as Jerry Falwell. Except what's worse is that her minions play the whole peace and compassion mamma thing, and with good reason. Hugs work a lot better at drawing people and dollars in than coming to America and preaching Hindutva. Even better if you can get them to believe you are god.

Hindu Nationalist, not "Hindu fundamentalist." Don't mix your metaphors.

It is less about getting back to religion than about India as a Hindu rashtra or nation, of a particular brand of religion, which would exclude about 20% or more of the population of non-Hindus and lower castes and indigenous tribals in India. Anyone seriously thinking about this ought to examine their conscience with regard to supporting such political dogma and bigotry as religion as what developed from the fascist origins of the RSS and sangh parivar.

Any threats are going to be reflections of Amma's love. If that's how they want to portray themselves, let them.

Amma, in all sense of the word, is as sweet as Amritham (honey). Her ability to put the great philosophies of spirituality and religion in the simplest of language that could be understood even by children is miraculous.

CHENNAI, INDIA, June 1, 2004: Discipline, going ahead with whatever planned undeterred by external
disturbances, patriotic fervor - these qualities of members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS,
India's largest volunteer organization) came to the fore at the concluding session of the Sangh's
annual training camp.
...Felicitating the participants, Brahmachari Vinayamrutha
Chaithanya of Mata
Amrithanandamayi Math,
underscored the need for the youths to learn the Sastras and Ithikasas like Ramayana and Mahabharatha
as they give strength to face the trials and tribulations of life.

...The RSS sent Munje to Italy and Germany. In Italy (let Modi know), he met Mussolini for aid and advice. In Germany he studied Hitler’s methods of recruitment and training of his terrorist Storm Troopers, their use of arms, pyrotechnics, subversive activities and art of Goebbelsian propaganda. Many skeletons of Hitler’s Nazi era are lying in the cupboard of the RSS at Nagpur. Tagore described fascism as “an exact counterpart” of Brahmanism. (Rabindranath Tagore by Krishna Dutta and Andrew Robinson) Hitler’s party, National (Rashtriya) Socialists and his Schutz Staffe (Guard detachment) or SS for short, ‘stand for Swayamsevak Sangh’.

Hitler’s stiff-hand salute and Swastika are the RSS symbols. Swastika had been the symbol of the Teutonic Knights and Free Corps Units. Writes John Toland, Hitler’s biographer:

For centuries it had represented not only for Europeans but also for certain North American Indian tribes the wheel of the Sun or cycle of life. From now on, and perhaps forevermore, the Swastika would have a sinister connotation.03.htm

Swastika has been religious symbol in hinduism since ancient times and continues to be so.

Agree with the rest of the post.

Yes, you are right. The wording was kind of funny on that, as I find it hard to believe that the supposedly Indian author didn't know that the swastika had Indian origins as well as being used elsewhere. I have known American jews who've traveled to the countryside of India and seen men with large swastika tattoos (the Hitler version was backward) who had no idea of its association with Naziism and treated them warmly. I wish there were better English language resources on the RSS, but there isn't much. I've seen enough, though, to have no doubt that they were affiliated with the Reich, and that their fascist agenda continues to current day.

While it may not seem like a big deal that a member of the Math would appear at an RSS function, imagine if a swami from the San Ramon Center began speaking at KKK functions encouraging "culture and pride". Wouldn't Amma's American followers be offended by that?

This is a brilliant, provocative (yet sadly truthful) comparison.

Now why is Jody the only one shouting these revelations from the rooftops? Are the hugs that good?

Or maybe they are slipping something in the prasad? Is the Hershey's chocolate company in on this? ;) Actually, I wouldn't doubt that either, at this rate.

Amma has been clearly associated with the RSS in India. This has been documented by the Indian press. Just because you have a fantasy about her doesn't mean it's my responsibility to protect it.
