Tilak Sells Nothing, And Yet Folks Are Still Buying

We were recently contacted by Connie Schmidt, a professional writer and critic of many things New Age™. Last week in her blog, Whirled Musings, she set her sights on Tilak, the Sri Lankan 'transmission' guru who was run out of New York City in the mid-90s after a critical article about him was published in New Yorker magazine.
Well... how soon they forget, because Tilak is back in business again in Los Angeles and Las Vegas and "blowing" up even bigger than before:
The big shtick seems to be his gift for blowing on people and making them see lights and colors. The cost of a Tilak "experience" varies, depending upon which Presentation, Retreat, Excursion, Portal or whatever is involved. (The Las Vegas workshop and birthday bash was listed at $875 a head, excluding air fare and accommodations.)Ladies, take note. Tilak's other big shtick is making hay with multiple partners. He left a string of ladies behind in New York, and we hear he's rocking a new string in the West. But since he fits the image of the magic space daddy to a 'T', there's not much to stop him from fleecing many more needy seekers.
There's one born every minute... and Tilak knows this. So beware tall, dark men hiding miniature flashlights in their mouths who want to blow on you.

NOW. that's what i meant, 'guru's getting all the $ and the chicks.
set aside what we think is 'right/wrong'. the guy's successful in every other sense of the word.
i am amazed. we can criticize and point out what a crook he is, yet he's enjoying himself.
perhaps there's something wrong with us. could it be?
God or no god-like, the reality is he's having all the bling bling. and we do not.
i ain't praising him or nothing. it's just that he's got the $ & chicks NOW & there's no arguing with that. end of story.

come to think of it, maybe these 'gurus' are 'enlightened' after all!.
not in the spiritual sense (if there's such a thing as spiritual or it's just a higher function of the mind.)
but enlightened in the way of how to tonnes more $ in the world and laying chicks like nobody's business while doing that.
never argue with reality, as they say 'what's the use of enlightenment if it can't pay your card bills'

Apparently Tilak has a Maui connection too (big surprise, eh?). According to Marcy From Maui, whose blog I quoted in my post, Joe Sugarman, direct-marketing king and BluBlocker® magnate, was also at the Tilak celebration. Marcy says Joe was responsible for bringing Tilak to Maui. Joe’s amazing success as a hustledork…I mean, direct marketer…has earned him not one but several homes on Maui, as well as a gorgeous young belly-dancing wife, Leila, who was also at the Tilak birthday bash in Vegas. She performed a belly dance at the party.
It wasn’t clear from Marcy’s bubbly copy whether Joe and Leila actually attended the Tilak workshop or just the climactic (now, no snickering) birthday celebration. But they were definitely there, and Marcy has the pics to prove it. (Pssst! Joe! Better keep Tilak away from Leila!)
I am continually amazed at the way hucksters and scam artists can reinvent themselves with ease, attracting new generations of followers who never seem to question their idol’s past. They will, however, question the motives of the whistle-blowers such as you, Jody. And they even go after me, though I'm more of a satirist than a serious whistle-blower. Yeah, lately I’ve been getting lectures from the Secretrons – fans of “The Secret” who can’t stand to see their favorite infomercial criticized.
Interestingly, Rhonda Byrne, creator of The Secret, was also at the Tilak b.d. celebration. Whaddaya wanna bet that Tilak shows up in “The Secret Part 2,” scheduled to begin production in January?

Interesting link, Anon. I was particularly interested to see that the article in question was written by David Lane, who has also written a great deal of material debunking another spiritual path (not mentioned in the article) in which I was once involved myself. But that's another blog post.
Oh, and regarding my previous comment: In the interests of being as accurate as possible while engaging in idol…er…*idle* gossip… I may have been wrong about Joe Sugarman himself being at the recent Tilak birthday bash in Vegas. It's kind of difficult to decipher Marcy From Maui's bubbly prose at times. And it’s definitely a challenge to figure out what was really going on; Marcy herself wrote, “Now what happens in Vegas Stay's (sic) in Vegas so I am giving you the ‘Tame Version’.”
But Sugarman's leggy wife Leila (who, apropos of nothing, “was a refugee in Serbia raising her sisters before she and Joe met!”) was there – and she performed an "amazing Belly Dance!" as a special b.d. gift for Tilak. And if Marcy is correct, Joe Sugarman is the person responsible for initially introducing Tilak to Maui. At any rate, he does all right for a guy who was chased out of New York not too many years ago. Sometimes it’s not even a matter of reinventing oneself – just relocating.

He gets that money and those chicks by a dishonest means. End of story.
That article by Lane should be assigned, required reading for anyone who decides to embark on a spiritual quest, no matter what the tradition.
Hadn't Lane himself, as he says in his bio information, meditated for years starting at an early age, accomplished all sorts of spiritual things, and seen visions, etc. Maybe that's why he could help his students see light, etc. Maybe Lane is a Master, himself!
To those wanting to know about Tilak FIRSTHAND what he and his experience is like I will tell you as I've had it and it was incredible!!
I'm from Dublin grew up in Chiacgo and was on holidays in Park City Utah skiing over christmas. I had recently been having alot of fights and problems in general with my mother who was there at the time. She was invited after a yoga class to join the group that Tilak had set up in a suite in a hotel and after one session with him I was then invited to come with my mum the next day.
Before arriving I had quite a terrible fight with my mother, accidentally pushing her causing her to deeply cut her foot. Our relationship hadn't been that bad in a long time.
We went to the suite and there were a group of other people there sitting around the living room, and everything was wonderfully casual. When you become open to what connections lie between all of us in the world, you can see how beautifully the universe brings people together.
The first person I sat next to was a young women in her mid-twenties and her mother and we started to chat. I was offered a Bagel and declined as I had just discovered I was a potential coeliac and needed to cut wheat / gluten out of my diet. This is when I discovered both the young women and her mother were coeliacs and gave me great advice on how to deal with my new condition.
It was an hour or two of chatting and listening before I was called into a bedroom to have my light moments with Tilak. Just for those saying there is a blue flashlight in his mouth- I can assure you this is not the case. I am a dental student and have been treating patients for 4 years using blue lights which cure our filling materials and when you close your eyes there is no way you can see the intense colours and flashes of light you see with Tilak. The colour intesity of the blue light is similar to our dental VLC lights but you see other colours as well with tilak's help. They represent different things as well. Tilak asks you to make a noise a humming what ever feels comfortable and he will sometimes blow lightly or randomly at your forehead while you are thinking of certain people in your life. You see blue when there is love between you and someone, red an oranges its like a flame when there is some turmoil and what i can only describe as clear cloud like light when there is peace something greater then love, balance. I was able to see all of these different colours with my eyes open or shut, and what was odd was when i opened my eyes i saw the blue light light up in tilak's dark eyes and the light looked like it was coming from inside me not from below or above or from inside his mouth.
I then was asked to talk out loud after tilak left to those i wanted to get my feelings across to. It didn't matter if it was my mum in the next room, my father in Chicago, my ex-boyfriend and best friend in Dublin or my boyfriend in Munich germany. I talked to them all as if they were there, and I cried my eyes out as I lay there on the beds letting all of my built up energy release and my love be sent to those i spoke to.
Don't get me wrong, this was the weirdest experience from start to finish, it sounds so wacky, but all can say is I came out of that room gleaming, shining, you can't get yourself to stop smiling, and its that type of smile you only see on people in very special occasions when they are so truly truly happy. And I was, and my relationship with my mother has improved and is so wonderful, beyond my wildest dreams.
So please, for those who are natural cynics as so many of us can be, I wish the best for you. I hope that you will someday understand the connection and the invisible and sometimes visible energy that connects us all and brings us such amazing opportunities. Tilak is not a guru, he's not some scam artist. He is a man lucky enough to understand how the world works and put it to best practice everyday.

Since you obviously googled the man you must have had a reason. After reading all of this you must be asking yourself how these posts are possible, comparing them to your experience. Well, a LOT of people went thru that and this is what this forum is for. Yes, it is amazing and inexplicable to some extent. Yes, it could do so much more than leave a trail of destruction behind. Not your call. You have a choice now: leave when you still can and let that memory of an awesome experience be what it is: YOUR experience. Or: be sucked in and give it all away. You choose. Choose wisely!
Just have to say, I've visited tilak once and yes the lights are amazing. Don't think they are a flashlight. Never visited him again but just wanted to support Chloe. He seems convincing. I don't know his money situation but I bet he makes less than the TV ministers. I'm for questioning though and I was in a room alone w/ him and didn't open his eyes. If it is a trick, it's a good one.
Hmm.. read the other posts on Tilak. It seems he and Bill Clinton have something in common. Not good for a leader or teacher or what ever Tilak is.
It is true that the spirituality Tilak offers is real. And, like many people who have some special powers be it money or something more unique like Tilak, there can also be corruption. Do I think he also takes advantage of women at times? Yes. As to our politicians, and many wealthy men and even women. But no one person is ever black or white. There are always shades of gray. I loved my experiences with Tilak, and I was careful not to be pulled into anything that was inappropriate. I must say that as a medical device sales rep of 25 years, my career has been similar. A person always needs to stay present and be alert for corruption... but don't let this keep you from experiencing life and some amazing talents that people have to offer. Just listen to your intuition and know where to draw the line for yourself.
Having spent my own brief time with Tilak, and being close to folks who spent a lot of time (and money) with him, all I can say is that he gets a lot of mileage (and profit) out of that little flashlight he uses.
