Amma Spins Her Indifference
File under: Amma All-Over-The-Planet and The Siddhi of PR
Despite being snubbed by a major spiritual leader from whom she may have been seeking greater market penetration, Amma has gone ahead and arrived at the labor-strife-stricken LAX Hilton for five days of
And rather than face of the inconvenience of moving her event and facing a cancellation fee, she spins her decision to stay at the tainted venue as one motived by a desire to avoid disappointing her devotees:
She said she felt "very sad and concerned" for workers at the hotel but decided to stay with her Los Angeles venue so as not to disappoint her 15,000 devotees here, and because she did not feel comfortable, as a foreigner and visitor to the country, taking sides in a local dispute. That's sort of like saying don't protest an unjust war if it won't result in an immediate withdrawal. We guess something being wrong doesn't mean that much to Amma if it could possibly get in the way of her revenue collection efforts.
"Suppose I tell the hotel people, will they change their policy? They won't," she said, adding, "I don't want to interfere with the local affairs."

I thought Amma was "God", not merely a visitor in a foreign country who doesn't want to make trouble.
Hilton pays its workers more than anyone else is offering them; if not, the workers would be elsewhere. It don't seem right when critics (who offer these workers precisely $0/hour) talk as if they're morally superior to Hilton (which offers them much more).
That's why I'm on the hugger's side this time. Though I do wish she was a bit more instructive in her response. Just a paragraph or two about supply and demand, economic theory, Adam Smith, etc, would have been nice.

Stuart, you sound like a guy who's not had to worry much how he would pay for the basic necessities. Try living in LA on $8 per hour and maybe having a child or two as well, then see if you don't feel the need for a few more bucks just to get by.
How about some of your noble kindness at work here.
Take a look at Sreeni Pattathanam, a rationalist writer from India who exposed how dangerous "Amma" cud be when it comes to disciplining her "devotees".
Sreeni Pattathanam was harassed by hi profile amma devotees just because he asked for investigation into the mysterious deaths of the ashram inmates
